Participated in an amicus brief (with the Reporters Committee and other amici) filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in U.S. v. Team Finance. The brief supports researcher Loren Adler, whose motion to intervene in a medical billing fraud case for the limited purpose of unsealing judicial documents was denied by a U.S. district court in Texas. The brief urges the Fifth Circuit to reverse the district court’s order and argues that, if allowed to stand, it would set a dangerous precedent that threatens the news media’s ability to intervene to seek access to judicial records and proceedings. The brief explains that intervention is an essential mechanism for the news media to challenge access restrictions, and thereby produce timely and informative reporting for the benefit of the public.
