Participated in an amicus brief (with the Reporters Committee and other amici) filed with the California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District in Ukraine Relief v. Gurzhiy. This is a defamation action arising from an article published on The Slavic Sacramento about the misuse of humanitarian aid donations intended for Ukrainians. The defendant, Gurzhiy, is the publisher of the online Russian-language news site. Gurzhiy filed a special motion to strike under the California anti-SLAPP Statute. Gurzhiy argued that the entirety of the plaintiffs’ claims are barred by the California Retraction Statute. The amicus brief supports Gurzhiy’s position, arguing that the California Legislature amended the statute to ensure its application to weekly online publications like The Slavic Sacramento. [2020]
