Participated in an intervenors/amicus brief (with the Reporters Committee and other amici) filed with the Belfast High Court in In re Fine Point Films & Trevor Birney. The case concerns filmmakers Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffrey, who were arrested for referencing an unpublished draft of a government report they received anonymously in their film “No Stone Unturned.” The film was directed and co-produced by American filmmaker Alex Gibney, a suspect in the case. The brief discusses protections in U.S. law for publication of lawfully acquired and newsworthy information, protections against the search and seizure of journalists’ work products, and state shield laws. It addresses U.S. law as a point of comparison when determining whether the police’s actions violated U.K. law and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. [2019]
