Congressman Bob Goodlatte To Deliver Keynote Remarks at Oct. 21 Event

Arlington, Va., June 22, 2015 – The Media Institute will honor author and Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan and Meredith Attwell Baker, president and CEO of CTIA–The Wireless Association, at its annual Friends & Benefactors Awards Banquet Oct. 21 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Peggy Noonan will receive the Freedom of Speech Award, while Meredith Attwell Baker will receive the American Horizon Award. The master of ceremonies will be communications attorney and former FCC chairman Richard E. Wiley.
After gaining prominence as a speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, Peggy Noonan went on to author eight books on politics, religion, and culture. Since 2000 she has been a columnist for the Wall Street Journal. Noonan is a contributor to CBS News and is a regular panelist on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” Her next book, The Time of Our Lives, will be published in November 2015.
Meredith Attwell Baker joined CTIA–The Wireless Association as its President and CEO in June 2014. Prior to joining CTIA, Baker served as Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at Comcast NBCUniversal in Washington. From 2009 to 2011, she was a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission. Before that Baker had served as Acting Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) will deliver keynote remarks. He is currently Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, and has also chaired its Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet.
The banquet will take place during this year’s Free Speech Week (Oct. 19-25), an annual national celebration of freedom of speech created in 2005 by The Media Institute.
The Freedom of Speech Award recognizes an individual who has worked to advance free speech and the First Amendment. The American Horizon Award recognizes an individual for visionary leadership in the communications industry.
