Arlington, Va., Sept. 17 – A photo contest aimed at amateur enthusiasts will offer photographers new chances to express their creativity as part of this year’s Free Speech Week (FSW).
The “Free Speech Everyday” photo contest opens Sept. 17 and runs through Oct. 12. Winners will be announced during Free Speech Week, Oct. 20-26, 2014. The contest is sponsored by Free Speech Week and the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA).
Entries should reflect freedom of speech in everyday terms – for example, photos of someone blogging; a political rally; bumper stickers on one’s car; family dinner conversation; a parade; neighbors chatting; signs supporting a cause … the creative possibilities are endless.
Prizes will include cash awards from The Media Institute, one-year subscriptions to NPPA’s News Photographer magazine, and merchandise from Jill-E Designs.
Judging the “Free Speech Everyday” contest will be a stellar group of eight professional photographers, courtesy of NPPA, who have won hundreds of awards among themselves – including seven Pulitzer prizes – during storied careers at the following outlets:
- James K. Colton, AP, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated;
- Cathaleen Curtiss, AOL Media;
- Annie Griffiths, Ripple Effect Images;
- William Snyder, Dallas Morning News;
- John Tlumacki, Boston Globe;
- John H. White, Chicago Sun-Times;
- Michael Williamson, Washington Post;
- Donald R. Winslow, News Photographer magazine.
Photo enthusiasts can find complete rules for the “Free Speech Everyday” photo contest and submit entries at the Free Speech Week website, www.freespeechweek.org.
Free Speech Week will take place next month from Monday, Oct. 20, through Sunday, Oct. 26. For more information about the week, visit the FSW website at www.freespeechweek.org.
