What is the Public Interest Council?

The Media Institute's Public Interest Council has been formed to further the development of sound communications policy by taking part in the dialogue advanced by the Gore Commission. Its members are Robert Corn-Revere, Esq., an attorney with Hogan & Hartson in Washington who specializes in communications law and regulatory matters; Prof. Robert M. O'Neil, founding director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression in Charlottesville, Va., and a professor of law at the University of Virginia; J. Laurent Scharff, Esq., communications attorney and former general counsel of the Radio-Television News Directors Association; and Laurence H. Winer, a professor at the Arizona State University College of Law who specializes in media and constitutional law. Also participating on the Council are key members of The Media Institute's staff, including President Patrick D. Maines, and Vice President Richard T. Kaplar.

The Public Interest Council participated in the work of the Gore Commission by submitting comments, attending Commission meetings and publishing a series of issue papers. The Council has also considered the public interest question independently, and will publish articles or papers in light of its research and developments at the FCC.

This Web site will serve as a resource for information and commentary about the Commission.
