Steve Case, chairman and CEO of America Online, Inc., received The Media Institute's 1998 American Horizon Award. Robert W. Decherd, chairman, president, and CEO of the A.H. Belo Corporation, was the recipient of the Institute's Freedom of Speech Award.

Special guest Rep. Tom Bliley (R-Va.), chairman of the House Commerce Committee, was the featured speaker. He was introduced by Time Warner VP Catherine Reid. Communications attorney and former FCC chairman Richard E. Wiley served as master of ceremonies.

Steve Case, who co-founded AOL 13 years ago and built it into the world's leading online services company, received the American Horizon Award in recognition of his leadership in promoting the vitality and independence of American media and communications. FCC Commissioner Susan Ness presented the American Horizon Award to Case.

Robert Decherd has advanced free speech principles as a media executive, official of several journalism organizations, and presidential advisory commission member.
