Arlington, Va., June 1, 2005 -- Two highly respected attorneys and First Amendment experts, Daniel Troy and Adonis E. Hoffman, have joined The Media Institute’s First Amendment Advisory Council, it was announced today by Institute President Patrick D. Maines. Daniel Troy is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Sidley & Austin. He is a former chief counsel of the Food and Drug Administration, and was President George W. Bush’s first appointee to the agency. Beginning in September 2006, Mr. Troy will head the ABA’s Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice. Mr. Troy is a partner in Sidley & Austin’s Life Sciences Practice and its Appellate Litigation group, focusing on the pharmaceutical, bio-technology, food, medical device, cosmetic, and media industries. He had been a member of The Media Institute’s First Amendment Advisory Council prior to his FDA appointment. Adonis Hoffman is senior vice president and counsel in the Washington office of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, representing the advertising industry before Congress, the FTC, FCC, and other federal agencies. He has served as an advisor to the chairman of the FCC, deputy bureau chief of the Cable TV Bureau, and senior counsel for international telecommunications. Previously, he was director of international law for the Carnegie En-dowment for International Peace, senior fellow at the World Policy Institute, and counsel to the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs. He had also been a partner at a Washington. D.C., law firm. "Dan Troy and Adonis Hoffman bring a wealth of experience to this highly distinguished First Amendment group, especially in the realm of commercial speech," said Mr. Maines.
