Program/Project
Description
Children's Content: With over 200 sites and services, Time Warner is one of the leading content providers on the Internet. Drawing on resources such as TIME, CNN, and Warner Bros., we have assembled a number of sites that offer parents and children a safe, informative, and entertaining atmosphere in which to share online experiences.
  • Among the safe and dynamic sites Time Warner offers for children: www.TIMEforkids.com; www.KidsWB.com; Sports Illustrated for Kids (www.SIforkids.com); and Looney Tunesville (www.bugsbunny.com).
  • One of our more popular kids' sites, www.CartoonNetwork.com, is a child-safe environment. The content and direct links (including sponsors and advertisers) must have the equivalent of a "G" rating and substantially comply with CARU and OPA guidelines. CartoonNetwork.com currently does not itself operate chats or bulletin boards, or link to sites that do so. Cartoon Network does conduct some chat events through AOL currently, but these events are monitored at all times by adult supervisors.
  • Our www.Parenttime.com site provides age-specific information to parents on a wide array of subjects culled from some of the nation's foremost parenting experts.
  • Time Warner's Turner Learning Group offers a wide variety of project-centered, theme-based, interdisciplinary curriculum units containing activities appropriate for grades 4-12 (in some cases materials are available for primary grades). The units combine print, video, and computer technologies to create an exciting and meaningful learning experience for students.
Children's Online Safety: Time Warner was a host of the 1997 Children's Online Summit, providing substantial funding to support this effort, and introducing a broad series of initiatives designed to teach kids about safety online.

The America Links Up campaign of 1998 was one tangible result of the Online Summit. America Links Up was a broad coalition of community, civic, and corporate interests and the U.S. Department of Education, joined together to educate and inform consumers about making the Internet a safe and rewarding place for kids. This campaign culminated in the first-ever "Kids Online Week" from Sept. 14-20, 1998, and centered around a televised National Teach-In on Sept. 15.

Time Warner's Turner Learning Group made a substantial commitment to provide below-cost television production and coverage of the teach-in, which in turn was made available to numerous media outlets. In addition, we offered time to air the several public service announcements that were created in conjunction with America Links Up. Our DC Comics created a special edition of the Daily Planet online newsletter specifically for the teach-in.
