"SurfWatch" provides Internet content management solutions for families, schools, ISPs, and corporations, enabling them to harness the positive content of the Internet. Parents and educators use SurfWatch to protect their children and students from the risk of exposure to inappropriate and negative material on the Internet.
Using its powerful and customizable content filtering technology, SurfWatch filters more than 140,000 sites in five core categories: Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco; Gambling; Hate Speech; Sexually Explicit; and Violence. These categories are filtered within WWW, chat, FTP, and newsgroups.
Due to its constant, comprehensive eye on new Internet sites, SurfWatch has consistently proven to be the industry's most effective filtering solution -- tests show the company's products to be 90 to 95 percent effective in blocking objectionable sites.
SurfWatch has extended its technology in developing integrated solutions for key providers of Internet content and technology with companies such as Alta Vista, Check Point Software, Disney Online, EarthLink, Microsoft, Netscape, WebTV, and Yahoo!.
SurfWatch is heavily involved in both defining and setting industry standards. As a founding member of the W3C PICS working group, SurfWatch is active in the Citizens Empowerment Coalition, a large and diverse group of Internet users, businesses, nonprofit groups, and civil liberties advocates who share the common goal of protecting the First Amendment and the viability of the Internet as a means of free expression, education, and commerce.

Key Highlights/
Milestones
|
- SurfWatch Software, a division of Spyglass, invented the Internet content filtering market in May 1995.
- SurfWatch was first to publish its blocking criteria -- so users know what to expect from our software -- and to implement it exactly, resulting in the most accurate filtering available.
- In May 1998, SurfWatch introduced the first channeling technology and delivered it through our Secure Learning™ Program as part of the SurfWatch Educational Edition solution for schools. The technology differs from other filtering products by providing Secure Learning environments that direct students to educational sites while steering them away from sexually explicit and violent content, hate speech, and sites promoting drugs, alcohol, or tobacco.
- On March 16, 1999 SurfWatch received patent number 5,884,033 from the U.S. Patent Office for its core filtering technology and processes.
