Program/Project
Description
"School Safety Profiler": This is a free Web-based tool to help individual schools quickly figure out where their underlying problems are, and head them off before they erupt.

Students and adults in a school fill out an anonymous survey on the Web. It covers six areas: discipline/school climate; respect for persons (including inclusion of people with perceived differences); presence of drugs or alcohol; presence of, or access to, weapons; students' ability to use social skills to handle challenging situations; and student access to and confidence in community resources for problem solving.

Both students and educators can see the results for their school, and can compare educator and student perceptions.

This tool was developed by Ripple Effects, makers of award-winning social learning software tools (www.rippleeffects.com/needs). Anyone can register, free of charge.

Key Highlights/
Milestones
A number of schools nationwide have signed up to use the online tool since its release in May 1999.
Results Forecast Increased ability for individual schools to identify problems before they erupt, to target prevention programs to meet local needs, and to qualify for federal funding in cases where that funding is contingent upon having performed a needs assessment.

Program/Project
Description
"relate for teens" online: This is a place for young people to get information, learn life skills, and exchange everyday wisdom on handling life: racism, sex, love, drugs, violence, friends, and more. Teens can take quizzes, share true stories, do interactive activities, find community resources, and speak their minds and hear what others say about tough issues.

Its content is based on the award-winning and research-validated "relate for teens" CD-ROM program, used in schools and community centers nationally to help teens solve life problems and build social-emotional skills.

Key Highlights/
Milestones
  • "relate for teens" has won four national awards: an Award of Excellence from Technology and Learning magazine; a Silver Apple from the National Educational Media Network; a Silver Cindy for Best Guidance & Counseling Program; and a Silver Creative Summit Award for educational software. It was also named a finalist for Best New Education Software and Best Secondary Curriculum Software from the Software Information Industry Association's 1999 Codie Awards.
  • Schools and community-based organizations in 12 states are using the program.
  • Early research shows that youth working with peers and the program showed dramatic increases in social skills, a factor connected to reduced chances of becoming involved in violent and unhealthy behaviors. This learning occurred without intervention from a content expert.
Results Forecast Schools using "relate" are guaranteed positive outcomes or their money back. Beneficial results may include reduced truancy and less involvement with drugs, alcohol, and violence (as either victims or victimizers); reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS; self esteem without self-centeredness; greater sense of personal power; and safer schools with fewer discipline problems.
