Lycos "SearchGuard" at lycos.com: Lycos SearchGuard makes searching the Web a safe activity for children, and for individuals, families, teachers, and librarians who wish to protect against inadvertent exposure to objectionable online content. SearchGuard is a free, optional service that empowers Web surfers to find the most relevant information they want, while filtering out adult, hate, and racist information. Users can easily turn SearchGuard on and off by simply entering their password in the Lycos.com search engine. SearchGuard has an optional feature that allows blocking access to chat, e-mail, and message boards, limiting inherent risks children face online. SearchGuard was created in response to a consumer study conducted by Lycos of thousands of Web users. Over 70 percent stated they wanted a search engine to provide on-demand blocking of adult, hate, and racist content.
|
Key Highlights/
Milestones
|
SearchGuard was launched in June 1998. Lycos became the first portal to allow safe searching of the Web, rather than limiting search results to a pre-screened pool of sites. Search Guard is continually updated so it maintains its efficacy in limiting inadvertent exposure to unwanted content.

Kids and other interested individuals will continue to utilize the solutions that allow them to see only the content they select while searching the Web.
