Program/Project
Description
"GetNetWise: You're One Click Away," launched July 29, 1999, is an online clearinghouse of information on keeping kids safe on the Internet. It is supported by the leading Internet firms and trade groups, including AltaVista, America Online, Ameritech, Association of American Publishers, AT&T, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Commercial Internet eXchange, Cyber Patrol, Dell, Disney Online, Excite@Home, IBM Corporation, Information Technology Association of America, Internet Alliance, Internet Content Coalition, Internet Content Rating Association, Lycos, Inc., MCI WorldCom, Microsoft Corporation, MindSpring Enterprises, Inc., N2H2, Inc., Net Nanny Software, Inc., Network Solutions, Inc., Prodigy Communications Corporation, PSINet, Inc., Road Runner, SurfWatch Software, United States Chamber of Commerce, United States Internet Council, Yahoo! Inc., and Zeeks.com. The project is managed by the Internet Education Foundation.

The idea to place GetNetWise resources "one click away" from parents originated in discussions with congressional and Administration leaders. Both Congress and the Administration have worked with industry leaders and well-known family groups in the 1997 Internet Online Summit and the 1998 America Links Up campaign to address children's safety online. GetNetWise was created in response to the recognition by the private sector that parents need information to help them guide their kids' online experience. The breadth of the companies involved in this initiative ensures that the GetNetWise resource will be virtually "one click away" from 95 percent of users on the Internet.

GetNetWise also had the advice and support of a wide variety of individuals and organizations with broad expertise in child and online safety issues, including Parry Aftab, American Library Association, Center for Democracy & Technology, Center for Media Education, The Children's Partnership, Consortium for

School Networking (CoSN), CyberAngels, Enough Is Enough, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), Larry Magid, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, National Urban League, NetFamilyNews, People for the American Way Foundation, Jean Armour Polly, and Progress & Freedom Foundation.
