Contact Name FamilyEducation Network Web tools and services provide resources for parents, educators, and communities to help their children succeed in school. With all activity that involves children, safety is one of our highest concerns. Currently, FamilyEducation promotes safety through articles and resources designed to meet diverse interests and heighten parent awareness. "The Hub" Web site provides fun activities such as quizzes for parents and children, and uses tools such as "polling" to help parents open discussions with their children on safety issues.

In Fall 1999, FamilyEducation will host a major "Online School Safety Event" building a "Net Community" around this concern of national interest. The event will begin with one week of intense activity addressing multiple components of safety, including Internet safety, sexual abuse, responsibility, guidance, and character development. Co-hosts will include executives from FamilyEducation's National Education and Community Association partners AASA, ASCD, ASCA, NSBA, NSPRA, PTA, RIF, ASPIRA, CEC, CIS, and others. Experts from health, government, law enforcement, and business will be included.

Key Highlights/
Milestones
Highlights of our Web site continue to be the interactive activities that engage parents and children and the volume of online discussion generated by the safety issue. Articles and information will address the interrelated nature of all child safety issues.

The Fall 1999 Online School Safety Event will begin with one week of articles, resources, interactive chat, and discussions addressing the multiple issues and complexities of child safety. Throughout the year, mini events will feature a component of the safety issue such as "Internet safety" and will provide opportunities for parents and children to participate in common activities. E-newsletters and access to national leaders will support the online event.

Results Forecast The goal of the online event is to:
  • Build a "Net Community" of parents, teachers, and national leaders
  • Provide the Net Community with information it needs, engaging parents and children in common activity
  • Elicit ongoing public response to child safety issues.
What is the national thinking on providing positive direction to children enabling them to develop life skills and ultimately make a positive social contribution? How does this "Net Community" reinforce competencies that enable children to cope with transitioning through ongoing life events? These are among the questions to be answered.

Event activities will link to existing information and resources on FamilyEducation Network and all Partner Web sites.
