The Cornerstone Project

The Cornerstone Project is The Media Institute’s public awareness and education program celebrating the First Amendment. The goal of the program is simple: to give the American public a renewed appreciation of the importance of free speech and free press. The target audience will extend well beyond Washington policymakers and will reach citizens nationwide with a succinct message: "Free Speech: The Language of America."

The Cornerstone Project will feature public service announcements, communications efforts such as op-ed pieces and a series of papers, an exhibit for display in libraries, a video presentation, and a national symposium in Washington, D.C. The program will also publish books and other materials. The First Amendment and the Media - 2001 is the first book released under the auspices of the Cornerstone Project.

The program was launched in October 2000 and will continue for at least three years. The Cornerstone Project Advisory Board comprises seven financial supporters representing a wide array of media interests. The Advisory Council includes 11 media, journalism, and free speech organizations. For more information on the project and how to participate, contact The Media Institute or check out the Cornerstone Project on The Media Institute’s Web site at www.mediainstitute.org.
